What Does GPS Do For Me?

By Frank Vanderlugt

The Upsides of GPS Vehicle Tracking

If youve gone shopping for a car recently, youve probably learned about GPS vehicle tracking. Many cars contain a Global Positioning System (GPS) that enables tracking companies to tell where the car is at any moment. This system can help in the case of an emergencies, an accident, or if your car is stolen.

GPS works using a satellite system built by the government. Two main types of GPS exist--active and passive. In the case of an active system, information about the vehicle is sent to a monitoring location. The monitoring company can tell where the vehicle is and also how fast its going when it is being driven. Some units also tell the monitoring company additional information, such as if the doors are opened or closed. This information is live, so people at the monitoring station can see real-time events occur.

A passive system is when the GPS collects this same sort of data about where a vehicle is driven and stores the information. Later, this information can be downloaded. The events have happened in the past. Some companies use passive systems since they only need this information in the event that something happens to the vehicle.

If your car has a GPS tracking system, it is in active system. You can communicate with someone at the tracking location using the GPS system in case of an accident or emergency. You press a button on the dash, and youre connected with someone at the tracking location. If youve been in an accident or are experiencing an emergency, the tracking company can send the police to help you.

GPS tracking systems are also used to recover stolen vehicles. Because the tracking company knows where the vehicle is, they can tell the police, who then can recover your car. Depending on how sophisticated the security system is in your car, you may also have a unit that will notify you if your car is moved without your permission. You can arrange for a message to be sent to your cell phone, for instance, letting you know that your car is being taken. That way, you can notify police immediately that your car has been stolen.

Tracking systems are very useful to companies who operate fleets of vehicles. The employer is able to know at any moment where every truck and car is. This not only helps prevent employee abuse, it also enables the company to recover their vehicles if they are stolen.

Many people also like the mapping feature of a GPS tracking system. If you are using a GPS, you can tell where you are at any particular time and then receive driving directions to your destination. Many rental cars have this valuable feature, which really helps when someone is trying to drive in a new city.

GPS tracking systems have proven to be a valuable feature on vehicles. Individuals can use the GPS tracking system to help them if their car is stolen or they are in an accident or have an emergency. Companies can use the GPS tracking system to keep taps on their vehicles and prevent loss. Finally, as any driver will tell you who has the GPS mapping feature in his car, having good directions so that you dont get lost can really be a timesaver.

Hikers and trekkers use analogous technology, but typically without the inclusion of street systems on their devices. Mapping software defines the territory that the user will encounter. The user can indicate waypoints (points of reference) so that the route taken may be saved for future reference. They can add points of benefit such as water sources, viable campsites, and other items of benefit on their trail. However, the portability demanded by hikers will also limit the functionality of the system as small screens mean that some detail will be lost.

Global Positioning Systems offer everything from hole overviews to Internet access "Shortgrass Technologies' Internet-based sports information system and financial ticker enables golfers to check college football scores on a Saturday afternoon or the price of stocks any weekday. Global positioning systems can track golf cars no matter where they are on the course, thus discovering bottlenecks and slower play. Golfers can order beverages and food en route to the turn, so golf clubs can offer more than a quick hot dog - a higher priced chicken sandwich, for instance...."

I always thought that GPS would go mainstream in automobiles first, and in a way I suppose it has, but maybe golfers will lead the real charge. I could have used a portable, library-centered GPS system myself to navigate the Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Library when I was there last fall!

Qualcomm's Vision of the Wireless Future "When he finished, there were 20 brand-new, CDMA-based mobile handsets and devices arrayed on the table, the high-tech souvenirs of Belk's most recent trip to Hong Kong and Japan.... 'These are not PowerPoint slides,' Belk said. 'These are real devices that are already shipping in volume in Asia.' " at Business 2.0]

And there's the rub. When I do my presentations, that's all I have - pictures of prototypes or of devices not available in the U.S. Europe and Asia really are 18 months ahead of us in this area.

"Beale also discussed Qualcomm's gpsOne location technology.... It also opens the door for many new location-based services, such as traffic information and local weather forecasts. On Japan KDDI's network, there are already more than 20 location-based services available -- all of which are relatively inexpensive, costing less than $5 per month."

I'm looking forward to being able to travel and have information come to me automatically based on my location. For example, if I'm at a conference and I'm looking for a restaurant, I'd like my phone/PDA/whatever to know where I am and offer a list of nearby choices. Maybe it should tell me what movies or plays are on tonight and if there are still tickets available. You get the idea....

"Predictably, both Belk and Beale anticipate strong growth for the wireless industry as ever-more-compelling products and services become available and the industry settles on a single communication standard. How long will that take? Belk, whose career began in the personal computing business in 1983, likened the wireless industry today to the PC business of the 1980s. 'I wouldn't worry about the wireless industry yet, it's still relatively young,' he said. 'Just look how long it took the PC industry just to get to the point of standardized parallel cables.' "

Not to beat a dead horse, but the ebook industry is even younger than PCs, and PDAs have really only come into their own during the last few years. So don't count any of these technologies out just yet.
